Human dimensions

Sea turtles are very special marine charismatic species; unlike sharks, dolphins or whales, sea turtles are unique, docile creatures that arrive predictably at particular places during the year – especially when nesting. This makes them both reliable, for tourism, but also vulnerable as predators and poachers wait for them to arrive.

Current research at the Nelson Mandela University in Gqeberha, South Africa investigates:

  • The value of sea turtles in indigenous communities in South East Africa.

  • How to include people and their perspectives into conservation planning designs
