Health

Sea turtle health and condition is directly linked. Condition is a visual indication of the history of the individual and can be seen if the animal is “fat”, with few barnacles and other epibionts, and no injuries or skin anomalies. Clinical health is more difficult to assess and requires a blood analysis to test for disease, parasites or blood chemistry. Animals may appear healthy but pollutants from ingested plastic may make the individual sick or the toxins ingested by the mom gets passed on to eggs and hatchlings. These problems can only be assessed by trained veterinary staff at aquaria.
